Philosophy of Socrates for Everyday Life

 Appearance

Beauty is a short lived tyranny

Give me beauty in the inner soul; may the outward and the inward be at one

Contentment

Contentment is natural wealth, luxury is artificial poverty

He who is not content with what he has, will not be content with what he would like to have

If you don’t get what you want, you suffer

If you get what you don’t want, you suffer

When you get exactly what you do want, you suffer because you can’t hold on to it forever

The secret of happiness is not found in wanting more, but in the capacity to enjoy less

He is richest who is content with the least, for contentment is the wealth of nature

How many things can I do without?

There is no stability in human affairs; therefore avoid undue elation in prosperity or undue depression in adversity

Envy is the ulcer of the soul

Death

The hour of departure has arrived and we go our separate ways, me to die and you to live. Which of the two is better? Only God knows

No evil can happen to a good man after death

Death may be the greatest of all human blessings

Education

Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel

I cannot teach anybody anything. I can only make them think

Friendship

Be slow to fall into friendship, but when you are in continue firm and constant

Gossip

Is it true?
Is it kind?
Is it necessary?

Strong minds discuss ideas
Average minds discuss events
Weak minds discuss people

Identity

I am not an Athenian or Greek, but a citizen of the world

Be true to your own self

Regard your good name as the richest jewel you can possible be possessed of

I tried to persuade each to you to concern yourselves less with what you have than with what you are

Kindness

Be kind, for everyone you meet is living a hard life

Be nicer than necessary to everyone you meet, for everyone is fighting some kind of battle

Do not do to others what angers you if done to you by others

Knowledge

All I know is that I know nothing

All I know beyond a shadow of a doubt, is that I know nothing beyond a shadow of a doubt

Knowing that you know nothing makes you the smartest of all

I neither know nor think that I know

It’s better to change an opinion than to persist in a wrong one

Prefer knowledge to wealth, for the one is transitory the other perpetual

Life

Life contains but two tragedies. One is not to get out heart’s desire; the other is to get it

The really important thing is not to live, but to live well

The unexamined life is not worth living

We cannot live any better than in seeking to become better

Not life, but good life, is to be chiefly valued.

Worthless people live only to eat and drink, people of worth eat and drink only to live

We can forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy in life is when men are afraid of the light

Beware the barrenness of a busy life

The greatest way to live with honour is to be what you pretend to be

The easiest and noblest way is not to be crushing others but to be improving yourself

To be is to do

Be as you like to be seen

Every action has its pleasures and its price

Love

The hottest love has the coldest end

Marriage

By all means get married: if you find a good wife you will be happy, if not you will become a philosopher

As to marriage or celibacy, a man may take which course he will, he will be sure to regret it

Reputation

The way to a good reputation is to endeavour to be what you desire to appear to be

Thinking

To find yourself, think for yourself

I cannot teach anything to anybody, I can only make them think

It is better to change your opinion then to persist in a wrong one

The highest realm of thought is impossible to reach too first attaining and understanding of compassion

Wealth

Wealth does not bring goodness, but goodness brings wealth and every other blessing, both to the individual and the state

Wealth does not bring excellence, but excellence brings wealth and everything else good for men, both individually and collectively

Wisdom

Wonder is the beginning of wisdom

The only true wisdom is in knowing that you know nothing

Know yourself, for when you know yourself you may learn to care for yourself

Prefer knowledge to wealth, for one is transitory, the other perpetual

True wisdom comes to each of us when we realise how little we understand life, ourselves, and the world around us

Let him who would move the world first move himself

Understanding a question is half the answer

By all means marry; if you get a good wife, you will be happy, if you get a bad one you will become a philosopher

If all our misfortunes were laid in one common heap, from which everyone must take an equal share, mast people would be content to take their own and depart

Every action has its pleasures and its price

If the head and the body are to be well you must begin by curing the soul

Virtue

When riches and virtue are placed together on the scales of balance, the one always raises as the other falls

The greatest privilege of man is the discussion of virtue
